Encouraging the public schools of Virginia to promote the ideals, heroes, and successes of nonviolence.

WHEREAS, young people are surrounded by violence in many forms in their daily lives; and

WHEREAS, violence takes a terrible physical, mental, emotional, and financial toll on society; and

WHEREAS, education is the best way to bring about positive change in behaviors and attitudes; and

WHEREAS, a Season for Nonviolence, a national campaign held January 30 to April 4 to mark the memorial anniversaries of noted nonviolence advocates Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., provides an opportunity to educate youth about nonviolence; and

WHEREAS, during this time, youth can create posters, recite quotes, and write poetry or essays about nonviolence; and

WHEREAS, youth may also learn about different aspects of nonviolence, such as showing respect and forgiveness, being courteous, practicing listening skills, expressing appreciation, and being generous; and

WHEREAS, youth can also study the lives of heroes of nonviolence, such as Mahatma Gandhi; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Kofi Annan; Sadako Sasaki; Ruby Bridges; and others; and

WHEREAS, learning about the heroes, ideals, and successes of nonviolence can be easily incorporated into students’ studies; and

WHEREAS, the observance of the Season of Nonviolence from January 30 to April 4 provides an opportunity for students in elementary and middle schools to study nonviolence for 15 minutes a day while students in high school can study two to three times a week; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the public schools of Virginia be encouraged to promote the ideals, heroes, and successes of nonviolence; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to Dr. Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction, requesting that she further disseminate copies of this resolution to her respective constituents so that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter.
