Commending Lloyd Tayloe Griffith, M.D.

WHEREAS, a dedicated physician, Lloyd Tayloe Griffith, M.D., retired in 2012 after 52 years of providing treatment and care to families in the Northern Neck; and

WHEREAS, born in Westmoreland County, Dr. Griffith graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1952 and received his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1956; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Griffith served as a flight surgeon in the United States Navy, earning a commendation for an accident investigation that he performed; and

WHEREAS, in 1960, after joining his father’s medical practice, Dr. Griffith set about caring for the people of Westmoreland County with an unyielding drive and an intuitive ability to diagnose and treat illnesses; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Griffith worked demanding hours to keep the office open seven days a week, ensuring that care was available whenever it was needed; with no hospitals nearby, the Griffith Clinic operated as both doctor’s office and emergency room; and

WHEREAS, no stranger to house calls, Dr. Griffith also gave generously of his time to a rescue squad; he never hesitated to respond when patients were in need; and

WHEREAS, an understanding man, Dr. Griffith thought only of his patients’ health and even occasionally took payment in the form of oysters or grain; and

WHEREAS, in 1962, Dr. Griffith became a charter fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians; and

WHEREAS, in 1970, Dr. Griffith became a charter member diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and maintained his board certification throughout his career; and

WHEREAS, in the 1970s, Dr. Griffith joined the Commonwealth’s Chief Medical Examiner as an assistant medical examiner in the Northern Neck, earning a commendation when he retired after 19 years of service; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Griffith deftly responded to industry changes, such as the rise in the pharmaceutical industry that enabled him to expand the five medications he had at his disposal in 1960, to ensure that his patients received the best possible care; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Griffith continued to work tirelessly for his patients until, after 52 years of service to the community, he retired in 2012; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Lloyd Tayloe Griffith, M.D., on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lloyd Tayloe Griffith, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the compassion and selflessness he showed to generations of Northern Neck residents.
