SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 283
Celebrating the life of Lucian Yates Grove.

WHEREAS, Lucian Yates Grove, a successful Roanoke businessman and a staunch supporter of his community, passed away on November 10, 2012; and

WHEREAS, born in 1924 in Washington, D.C., Lucian Grove later attended Virginia Tech, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1947; and

WHEREAS, hired by the Appalachian Power company after he graduated, Lucian Grove would go on to design and oversee construction of the underground Roanoke power grid that is still in use today; and

WHEREAS, an industrious man, Lucian Grove eventually became president and owner of Contracting Enterprises Incorporated, a utilities construction company that he would faithfully lead for the next 60 years; and

WHEREAS, Lucian Grove expressed his love for Roanoke through his extensive community involvement, holding positions as the president and campaign chair of the United Way, and as the president of the Blue Ridge Mountains Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the West Central 4-H Center, and the Roanoke Roundtable; and

WHEREAS, Lucian Grove further shared his wisdom on a wide variety of boards, including the Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley, the Valley Beautiful Foundation, the Roanoke chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the United Negro College Fund, the Science Museum of Western Virginia, and the Sons of the American Revolution; and

WHEREAS, committed to the well-being of his fellow Roanoke residents, Lucian Grove served on the Roanoke City Council from 1976 to 1980, with the Roanoke City Council naming him as the 1983 Citizen of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Lucian Grove assisted the Roanoke Jaycees in the design, construction, and installation of the Zoo Choo at Mill Mountain Zoo, which was moved to the Virginia Museum of Transportation in 2007; and

WHEREAS, Lucian Grove, a respected alumnus and fan of Virginia Tech, was an Ut Prosim Society inductee and member of the Virginia Tech Committee of 100 and received a School of Engineering Award for excellence in engineering and the Virginia Tech Alumni Distinguished Service Award; and

WHEREAS, Lucian Grove also received the Night Rider Award from the Roanoke Jaycees, the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America, and the Silver Hope Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society; and

WHEREAS, Lucian Grove touched hundreds of lives through his impressive business legacy, generous community involvement, and an enduring commitment to securing the bright future of Roanoke; and

WHEREAS, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, Lucian Grove is survived and deeply missed by his wife of 60 years, June; and his children, Elizabeth, Lucian, Jr., Anne, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Lucian Yates Grove, a dynamic and indelible member of the Roanoke community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lucian Yates Grove as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
