SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 262
Celebrating the life of Dr. Freddye Sue Turner Davy.

WHEREAS, Dr. Freddye Sue Turner Davy, an inspiring educator who touched the lives of countless individuals over the course of her decades-long career and who served as the director of Hampton University’s Honors College, died on June 2, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a native of Arkansas, Freddye Davy graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Philander Smith College, a master’s degree from the University of Maryland, and a doctorate from Vanderbilt University; and

WHEREAS, from a one-room school in a prison to elementary, junior, and senior high schools to college campuses, Dr. Davy created positive learning environments and encouraged students to excel in all of their endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Davy taught in the public schools of Arkansas, the District of Columbia, and Maryland and spent seven years at Benedict College before joining Hampton University as the director of its Honors College in 1994; and

WHEREAS, as director, Dr. Davy developed a program that promoted high standards of learning and built strong leaders through a variety of seminars, community service and outreach, participation in conferences, and preparation for graduate school; and

WHEREAS, a member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Davy earned the respect and admiration of her colleagues throughout her career as she provided thoughtful insight and guidance on a variety of educational issues; and

WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, Dr. Davy served as an ordained deacon and elder, on the Session of Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, and as a commissioner to the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia, and chaired the Committee on Witness; and

WHEREAS, for more than 40 years, Dr. Davy worked in music ministry, sharing her talents as a pianist, organist, choir member, and choir director; and

WHEREAS, a woman of great intelligence, compassion, and strength, Dr. Davy devoted her life to the betterment of others and was recognized for her contributions to Hampton University in April 2012 when the Honors College was renamed the Freddye T. Davy Honors College; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Earl, Freddye Davy will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Earl, Jr.; Sue; and Fred; and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, colleagues, and former students; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an esteemed educator, Dr. Freddye Sue Turner Davy; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Freddye Sue Turner Davy as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
