SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 254
Celebrating the life of Warren Gordon Richardson.

WHEREAS, Warren Gordon Richardson, a dedicated law-enforcement professional and the former sheriff of Fluvanna County, died on September 11, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a native of Goochland County, Gordon Richardson graduated from Smithdeal-Massey Business College, served in the United States Army for six years, and enjoyed a 14-year career in the banking industry before joining the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy in 1972; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy, Gordon Richardson worked diligently to protect and serve his fellow citizens; in 1977, he became deputy sheriff and 10 years later was appointed sheriff, serving three four-year terms before his retirement in 1999; and

WHEREAS, known for his commitment to the community, Gordon Richardson worked to expand services to Fluvanna County residents, helping organize the Kents Store unit of the Fluvanna County Volunteer Fire Department and serving as a charter member, president, captain, and sergeant of the Fluvanna County Volunteer Rescue Squad; and

WHEREAS, Gordon Richardson played an instrumental role in coordinating emergency communications through a new central radio dispatching system and grew the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office from a staff of three and one K-9 unit to a staff of 15 with two K-9 units, providing 24-hour coverage to county residents; and

WHEREAS, an active member of the community and outstanding role model, Gordon Richardson served as master of Cabell Masonic Lodge 328, A.F. & A.M., and made many valuable contributions to public safety during his tenure with the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, Gordon Richardson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Jean; daughter, Jackie, and her family; former colleagues; and Fluvanna County residents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired law-enforcement professional, Warren Gordon Richardson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Warren Gordon Richardson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
