SENATE BILL NO. 786 AMENDMENT IN THE NATURE OF A SUBSTITUTE (Proposed by the Senate Committee for Courts of Justice on January 18, 2013) (Patrons Prior to Substitute--Senators Marsden and Ebbin [SB 965]) A BILL to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered 18.2-309.1, relating to reports of lost or stolen firearms; duty of law enforcement.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1.  That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 18.2-309.1 as follows:

§ 18.2-309.1. Lost or stolen firearms; duty of law enforcement.

Whenever a person reports the theft or loss of a handgun or assault firearm to the Department of State Police, any police department or sheriff's office, the officer or department receiving such report shall enter the appropriate information required by the Department of State Police into the "information system" known as the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
