Commending the Southampton Academy football team.

WHEREAS, the 2012 Southampton Academy eight-man football team, located in Courtland, Virginia, won their second state championship in eight years; and

WHEREAS, the Southampton Academy Raiders finished with a perfect 12 - 0 record, capping off an undefeated season with a win against Word of God Christian Academy in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association eight-man league state championship; and

WHEREAS, the Southampton Raiders attained several convincing wins throughout the regular season, including one 40 - 34 win against Word of God Christian Academy that ended the Word of God Rams’ 35-game winning streak; and

WHEREAS, in the state final, the Southampton Raiders jumped to a staggering 24 - 0 lead, held the Rams to only six points in the first half, and stalwartly maintained their lead through the second half; and

WHEREAS, the Southampton Raiders defeated Word of God 52 - 28, this time ending the Rams’ three-year run as state champions; and

WHEREAS, Tonee Hill, a junior at Southampton Academy, was named league Most Valuable Player after he ran 180 yards on 14 carries and scored three touchdowns in the final; and

WHEREAS, other scoring leaders for Southampton Academy included sophomore quarterback Matt Rose with 71 yards in seven carries and one touchdown, junior Cameron Hines with 61 yards in seven carries, and junior Paul Parker with 38 yards in nine carries and a touchdown; and

WHEREAS, head coach Dale Marks, winner of the Coach of the Year Award, credits his players for staying focused and setting the tone of the game early; and

WHEREAS, the perfect season and the championship win are a tribute to the talent of all the players, the keen leadership of the coaching staff, and the support of the students and faculty at Southampton Academy; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Southampton Academy eight-man football team hereby be commended for winning its second state championship in eight years; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dale Marks, head coach of the Southampton Academy football team, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the team’s hard work, discipline, and skill.
