Celebrating the life of Stewart Howard Alston.

WHEREAS, Stewart Howard Alston, a loyal public servant and devoted member of the Norfolk community, died on August 8, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Stewart Alston graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, attended Virginia Union University, and transferred to what is now known as Norfolk State University to finish his education; and

WHEREAS, bravely and honorably serving his country during the Korean War, Stewart Alston was a veteran of the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Stewart Alston returned to the Commonwealth and became a hardworking member of the United States Postal Service; he served the community in this capacity for over 30 years and won many awards for his outstanding service; and

WHEREAS, as a proud member of the Bachelor Benedict Social Club for over 45 years, Stewart Alston worked to better the lives of his fellow Norfolk residents by encouraging social awareness and building community spirit; and

WHEREAS, Stewart Alston enjoyed faith and fellowship with the community as a longtime member of the historic First Baptist Church on Bute Street; he provided leadership as a deacon and donated his time and experience to the church in a variety of other roles; and

WHEREAS, Stewart Alston will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Doretha; children, Victor, Antoinette, and Chrystal, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Stewart Howard Alston, a distinguished public servant and respected member of the Norfolk community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Stewart Howard Alston as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
