Commending Golden Bethune-Hill.

WHEREAS, Golden Bethune-Hill, the co-founder of the Community Free Clinic of Newport News, has been named a 2012 Daily Press Citizen of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Golden Bethune-Hill grew up in Newport News and earned a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University and a master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University; she later completed the Johnson & Johnson Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurse Executives at the University of Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, Golden Bethune-Hill, who began her career as a registered nurse, retired in 2010 as executive vice president of Riverside Health System in Newport News after an outstanding career in health care; and

WHEREAS, Golden Bethune-Hill has served the community in a variety of capacities throughout the years and earned numerous awards and accolades for her distinguished service; and

WHEREAS, in 2010 Golden Bethune-Hill, concerned about the health care needs of local residents, drew upon her extensive health care background and co-founded, along with her husband, Charlie Hill, the Community Free Clinic of Newport News to provide free medical and dental care to uninsured residents of the Virginia Peninsula who meet certain criteria; and

WHEREAS, Golden Bethune-Hill reached out to a host of individuals and organizations to generate support for the Community Free Clinic of Newport News, a vital service for local residents; and

WHEREAS, Golden Bethune-Hill, as the volunteer executive director of the Community Free Clinic of Newport News, has generously given of her time and talents and has been a driving force behind the clinic’s success; and

WHEREAS, today, the Community Free Clinic of Newport News, under the direction of Golden Bethune-Hill, operates 30 hours a week, has 135 volunteers, offers monthly HIV/AIDS testing, and provides patient education classes and community health events; and

WHEREAS, a model citizen, Golden Bethune-Hill has touched the lives of countless individuals and positively influenced health care for local residents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Golden Bethune-Hill hereby be commended on her selection as a 2012 Daily Press Citizen of the Year; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Golden Bethune-Hill as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for her commitment to the health and well-being of her fellow residents.
