Commending Charlie Hill.

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill, the co-founder of the Community Free Clinic of Newport News, has been named a 2012 Daily Press Citizen of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill grew up in Newport News and earned a bachelor’s degree from Virginia State College, now University, and a master’s degree from Hampton University; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill retired as executive vice president of human resources for Landmark Media Enterprises after a distinguished career in the telecommunications, chemical, and media industries; and

WHEREAS, throughout his life, Charlie Hill has taken an active role in community affairs, serving on the boards of numerous organizations and earning an array of awards and accolades for his outstanding service; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill has been a powerful advocate for public health in the Newport News community, helping found the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum in 2006, a few years after his own diagnosis with prostate cancer; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill has tirelessly worked to raise awareness of prostate cancer in the Hampton Roads area, which has a high incidence and mortality rate among African American men; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill reaches out to a wide array of individuals and organizations to encourage early detection of prostate cancer through the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum; the organization offers free screenings and conducts educational events and workshops year-round; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill also serves on the board of the Virginia Health Care Foundation and The Planning Council, as chair of the International 100 Black Men of America, Inc., Prostate Cancer Initiative, and as a member of the Cancer Prevention Coalition of the Peninsula; and

WHEREAS, in 2010 Charlie Hill co-founded the Community Free Clinic of Newport News with his wife, Golden Bethune-Hill; the clinic provides free medical and dental care to uninsured residents of the Virginia Peninsula who meet certain criteria; and

WHEREAS, a model citizen, Charlie Hill has touched the lives of countless individuals and positively influenced health care for local residents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Charlie Hill hereby be commended on his selection as a 2012 Daily Press Citizen of the Year; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Charlie Hill as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for his commitment to the health and well-being of his fellow residents.
