13105326DWHEREAS, journalists Don and Norma Pierce moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Richmond in 1986; and
WHEREAS, Don Pierce, a lifelong student of Civil War history, became fascinated with Richmond’s history and trained and worked as a tour guide for the Historic Richmond Foundation from 1987 to 2000; and
WHEREAS, upon discovering that there was no comprehensive publication listing Virginia’s historical sites and events, Don and Norma Pierce determined to fill this void and wrote, edited, designed, and published a series of newspapers, including the Guide to Historic Richmond, Guide to Historic Virginia, Guide to Virginia’s Civil War, and Civil War Traveler; and
WHEREAS, the Pierces’ newspaper became such valuable media for promoting the Commonwealth’s historic sites that they have been the primary fulfillment piece for Virginia’s Civil War Trails and the Virginia Tourism Corporation; and
WHEREAS, the Pierces created the award-winning website www.civilwartraveler.com, one of the first and most accessible websites designed to aid visitors to Civil War sites in Virginia and across the nation; and
WHEREAS, Don Pierce helped create several campaign trails that have become the core of the Civil War Trails program in Virginia and beyond, and reviewed and edited more than 2,000 Civil War Trails interpretive markers; and
WHEREAS, the Pierces helped pioneer the creation and use of web-based audio podcast tours of Virginia Civil War battlefields and Richmond Civil War sites; and
WHEREAS, the Pierces have written, published, or republished several books relating to the history of Richmond and Central Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the Pierces are moving to Kansas to be closer to their family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Don and Norma Pierce hereby be commended for the contributions that they have made to the promotion of the Commonwealth’s historic sites and historical resources; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Don and Norma Pierce as an expression of the House of Delegates’ appreciation for their years of service and best wishes in their future endeavors.
