2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Rappahannock Choral Society, a 73-voice, audition-only regional chorus, is dedicating its spring concerts on Mother’s Day weekend, May 11 and 12, 2013, at Chancellor High School’s auditorium in Spotsylvania County to a special remembrance of the Civil War and the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Chancellorsville; and
WHEREAS, to remember a war that cast brother against brother and friend against friend, the Rappahannock Choral Society will perform authentic songs that include period pieces expressing the feelings of Confederate and Union soldiers in battle and at rest, music from the home front, and songs from the Broadway musical, Shenandoah; and
WHEREAS, the Civil War concerts by the Rappahannock Choral Society will also include the Wilhousky arrangement of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” as sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir; and
WHEREAS, some of the Rappahannock Choral Society’s music will be familiar, some will be new; some songs will make the audience tap their feet to the beat and others will leave individuals with an ache in their hearts; and
WHEREAS, the Rappahannock Choral Society is under the award-winning artistic direction of Linda Monner, with the incomparable accompaniment of Marilla Haas; and
WHEREAS, these concerts are made possible in part by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts and by the Rappahannock Choral Society, Inc., a nonprofit corporation that is a partner of Spotsylvania County Parks and Recreation, a Partner in Education with Spotsylvania County Schools, a member of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Arts and Cultural Council of the Rappahannock; and
WHEREAS, the winners of the Rappahannock Choral Society graphic arts contest and the Anne Parker Memorial Scholarship will be recognized at the Saturday evening concert; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Rappahannock Choral Society hereby be commended for their exemplary leadership as the premier community choral organization in Spotsylvania County and the Rappahannock Region; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Rappahannock Choral Society as an expression of the House of Delegates’ gratitude for the society’s many valuable contributions to quality music education in the Commonwealth and best wishes in all future endeavors.
