2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, Gary and Diane Heavin founded Curves International (Curves) in 1992 as a fitness and weight-loss facility designed specifically for women; and
WHEREAS, Curves International, a fitness franchise with facilities around the globe, celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2012; and
WHEREAS, Curves promotes and provides a safe environment in which women can lose weight, get healthier, and work towards leading more fulfilling lives; and
WHEREAS, with thousands of locations in over 85 countries and more than 80 locations in Virginia, Curves is the largest fitness franchise in the world, providing hundreds of jobs and economic opportunities in the locations’ communities; and
WHEREAS, Curves provides entrepreneurially minded individuals the opportunity to own their own business, while helping women of all ages achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle; and
WHEREAS, Curves is listed in Guinness World Records as the world’s largest fitness center franchise; and
WHEREAS, Entrepreneur Magazine named Curves its number one Best New Franchise for two years in a row; and
WHEREAS, Curves was recognized as Franchisor of the Year by the American Association of Franchisees and Dealers; and
WHEREAS, Curves has put extensive amounts of time and money into researching its diet and exercise programs and works to provide women with the best methods to lose weight and keep the weight off; and
WHEREAS, Curves and the prestigious Cleveland Clinic work together to promote health, wellness, prevention, and the belief that a healthy population is more productive and requires less health care; and
WHEREAS, seeking ways to better serve Curves’ customers, Gary Heavin co-authored Curves on the Go, a New York Times best seller; and
WHEREAS, on May 17, 2012, Curves celebrated its inaugural National Curves Day, an event encouraging women to make commitments to secure and maintain their own health; and
WHEREAS, Governor Robert F. McDonnell issued a Certificate of Recognition to Curves locations in Virginia, recognizing the clubs’ contributions to the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Curves has helped millions of women around the world lose weight, gain strength, and get fit; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Gary and Diane Heavin hereby be commended for creating Curves International on the occasion of its 20th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Gary and Diane Heavin as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for their achievements in bettering the lives of millions of women.
