13104399DWHEREAS, United States Marine Corps Sergeant Eric Shelvy is commended for his meritorious service to the nation; and
WHEREAS, Eric Shelvy, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 335, graduated from Marine Corps boot camp in October 2002; and
WHEREAS, Eric Shelvy was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, India Company, one of the first infantry forces to enter Baghdad; and
WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Shelvy courageously fought in the month-long battle at Fallujah and was nearly killed in combat on his 20th birthday; and
WHEREAS, a photographer captured Lance Corporal Shelvy in action in Fallujah and the photo was featured on the cover of Time Magazine; and
WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Shelvy was later promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Shelvy later worked at American embassies in Moscow and Kuala Lumpur, before becoming the assistant detachment commander stationed at the American embassy in The Hague, Netherlands; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Shelvy earned a bachelor’s degree during his various Embassy assignments; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated Marine, Sergeant Shelvy has demonstrated great courage and fortitude throughout his military career and earned the respect of his fellow Marines for his loyalty and commitment to them; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Sergeant Eric Shelvy, a patriotic Virginian, hereby be commended; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sergeant Eric Shelvy as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration and gratitude for his exemplary military service.
