Commending the George Mason University School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution.

WHEREAS, the George Mason University School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, established in 1981, has led to the development of the field of conflict analysis and resolution for more than 30 years; and

WHEREAS, the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, commonly known as “S-CAR,” focuses on understanding deeply rooted conflicts; studying the nature, origins, and types of conflicts; and developing ways to productively resolve conflict; and

WHEREAS, an innovative, entrepreneurial institution, S-CAR attracts as its faculty the foremost scholars and practitioners in the field and offers its students the opportunity to earn undergraduate, graduate, dual, and doctoral degrees as well as certificates; and

WHEREAS, S-CAR students have the opportunity to engage in conflict in a small group and interpersonal level and focus on analyzing and intervening in a large group, interstate, and interethnic conflicts; and

WHEREAS, S-CAR, through the thoughtful generosity of Edwin and Helen Lynch, brings groups in conflict to Point of View, a 120-acre international research and retreat center located 30 miles south of Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, the tranquil setting near the Potomac River and protected wetlands of Mason Neck serves as the ideal location for conflict resolution, teaching, and research by S-CAR faculty; and

WHEREAS, S-CAR faculty and students contribute to peace initiatives in regions at home and abroad, including Northern Ireland, Mozambique, the Balkans, and Syria; and

WHEREAS, S-CAR has partnered with Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University in the Republic of Georgia and Yerevan State University in Armenia to launch conflict resolution programs, established a dual degree program with the University of Malta, and formed student exchange programs with schools around the Mediterranean and in Europe; and

WHEREAS, S-CAR’s alumni, who number more than 800, have gone on to serve in educational institutions, police forces, the United Nations, the federal government, private organizations, and other organizations and institutions; and

WHEREAS, S-CAR looks forward to continuing to positively impact peace and conflict resolution programs throughout the world, to expand the understanding of conflict resolution, and to further train individuals in the practical skills needed to resolve conflict; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the George Mason University School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution hereby be commended for its many contributions to the field of conflict analysis and resolution; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the George Mason University School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the school’s commitment to advance the body of knowledge concerning conflict analysis and resolution and to prepare students equipped to make a positive impact in peace and conflict resolution programs around the world.
