Celebrating the life of Jack Williams Webb, Sr.

WHEREAS, Jack Williams Webb, Sr., a public servant, businessman, veteran, and longtime resident of Suffolk, died on January 30, 2013; and

WHEREAS, born in Nansemond County, Jack Webb met the love of his life, Faye Nimmo, in elementary school and married her at the end of his sophomore year with the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Tech; and

WHEREAS, called to military service at the end of his sophomore year of college, Jack Webb served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and rose to the rank of captain; and

WHEREAS, after his service, Jack Webb returned to Virginia Tech to complete his degree as a member of the Class of 1944; and

WHEREAS, Jack Webb briefly worked for the family trucking business, Webb’s Transfer, before beginning what would become a 50-year career in insurance by taking a job at Flat Top Insurance in Bluefield, West Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Jack Webb put his career on hold when he was again called upon to serve his country, this time as a training officer during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, returning to Suffolk in 1957, Jack Webb followed his dreams of entrepreneurship and opened Nansemond Insurance Agency; starting with one client, Webb’s Transfer, the company has flourished over the years and many of Jack Webb’s progeny have taken on leadership roles; and

WHEREAS, a hard working public servant, Jack Webb was a member of the Suffolk City Council, the Suffolk School Board, and the Suffolk Industrial Authority; he was also active in the community through many civic organizations, business partnerships, and bridge gatherings; and

WHEREAS, a devoted Christian, Jack Webb built many friendships at West End Baptist Church, where he founded and taught in the Alpha Omega Sunday School program and was named Deacon Emeritus; he also taught Bible study classes at a local nursing home; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement, Jack Webb and his wife traveled the world and enjoyed many trips to Florida or to their beach home in Southern Shores, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, throughout his life, Jack Webb served his country, community, and family with equal distinction, dedication, and vigor; and

WHEREAS, Jack Webb is survived by his beloved wife, Faye; children, Jack, Joseph, John, and Mary, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jack Williams Webb, Sr., a respected public servant, business owner, and veteran; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jack Williams Webb, Sr., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
