2013 SESSION
13104213DWHEREAS, Hollin Hall Senior Center will proudly celebrate 30 years of serving the senior residents of Fairfax County in 2013; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Hunt area contains one of the highest concentrations of senior citizens in the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area; and
WHEREAS, in 1982, recognizing the need, Fairfax County government, school board leaders, and the Mount Vernon Chapter of the AARP worked together to open three rooms of the old Hollin Hall Elementary School for use as a senior center; and
WHEREAS, Hollin Hall Senior Center, sponsored by the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, opened its doors on January 31, 1983, to 35 seniors with the support of Supervisor Sandy Duckworth, a Fairfax County Supervisor; Ann Nottingham, an avid community supporter; and a corps of dedicated community volunteers; and
WHEREAS, in 1987 Hollin Hall Senior Center underwent a renovation, with participants meeting at an Elkins Street location for nearly a year before returning to Hollin Hall and holding an Open House on June 24, 1988; and
WHEREAS, Hollin Hall Senior Center has grown from 35 seniors and a program of six activities to averaging more than 150 seniors and 12 activities a day in 17 rooms; and
WHEREAS, Hollin Hall Senior Center offers a wide array of programs designed to meet the recreational, social, physical, and intellectual needs of senior adults aged 55 and above who are residents of Fairfax County; and
WHEREAS, Hollin Hall Senior Center, a volunteer-run center, operates with the generous support of county and state government, local clubs, citizen associations, businesses, and nonprofit groups; and
WHEREAS, Hollin Hall Senior Center is the only clubhouse model among the senior centers in Fairfax County and provides seniors with a variety of activities and opportunities for companionship and fulfillment Monday through Friday; and
WHEREAS, Hollin Hall Senior Center has twice received a Center of Excellence Award from Fairfax County’s Department of Community and Recreation Services; and
WHEREAS, Hollin Hall Senior Center provides an important service to the seniors of Fairfax County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Hollin Hall Senior Center hereby be commended on the occasion of its 30th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Hollin Hall Senior Center as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for the Center’s commitment to serving Fairfax County’s senior adults.
