2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, John Marshall Library in Alexandria celebrates its 50th anniversary on April 22, 2013; and
WHEREAS, opened as a storefront library in the Rose Hill Shopping Center in Franconia on April 22, 1963, John Marshall Library was the eighth branch of the Fairfax County Public Library; and
WHEREAS, then the largest branch library in the area, John Marshall Library was 2,450 square feet and could house 20,000 books and seat 18 adults and 4 children; and
WHEREAS, in John Marshall Library’s early days, circulation of the 6,000-volume collection was limited to one fiction and one non-fiction title for each adult card and one fiction, one non-fiction, and one easy title for each juvenile card; and
WHEREAS, in 1975 John Marshall Library moved to its new location and officially opened for business on February 18, 1975; and
WHEREAS, the new John Marshall Library building had over five times the floor space of the original and could house 24,000 adult books and 14,000 children’s books; and
WHEREAS, fronted by beautiful gardens, John Marshall Library became a cultural landmark in the Rose Hill and Bush Hill communities; and
WHEREAS, today, John Marshall library and its helpful staff continue to strive to meet the needs of the public, offering large collections of books, eBooks, newspapers, and magazines; and
WHEREAS, serving the community in many other ways, John Marshall Library provides meeting spaces, offers early literacy programs, and partners with local schools for educational initiatives; and
WHEREAS, for five decades, the staff and administrators of the John Marshall Library have promoted and fostered the growth of knowledge in the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That John Marshall Library hereby be commended on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Marshall Library as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the library’s tradition of service to the public.
