2013 SESSION
13103611DWHEREAS, John Henry, a deputy with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, received a commendation for administering life-saving first aid at the scene of an incident; and
WHEREAS, an eight-year veteran of the department, John Henry is a member of the SWAT Team and has received advanced combat medical training; and
WHEREAS, on September 1, 2012, John Henry was assisting another deputy with a traffic stop when the passenger of the vehicle accidentally shot himself in the leg; and
WHEREAS, concerned that the man may have severed a major artery, John Henry immediately sprang into action and began to treat the wound; and
WHEREAS, while John Henry carries medical supplies such as tourniquets and quick-clot gauze, this was the first time he had treated a gunshot wound, and he relied heavily on his training; and
WHEREAS, the incident illustrates the importance of extensive and continuing training in the uncertain environments bravely faced by police officers and first responders; and
WHEREAS, John Henry exemplifies the integrity and devotion to duty displayed by all members of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office and law-enforcement professionals throughout the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That John Henry hereby be commended for being honored by the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office for his skill in handling a medical emergency; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Henry as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration and respect for his service and quick-thinking action in the line of duty.
