HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 117
Commending Bernard M. Fagelson.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 11, 2013

 

WHEREAS, Bernard M. Fagelson of Alexandria, a World War II veteran and acclaimed land use attorney will proudly celebrate his 100th birthday in 2013 in the company of loving family members and friends; and

WHEREAS, a native of Alexandria, Bernard “Bernie” Fagelson grew up on a dairy farm at a time when the Northern Virginia area was still predominantly rural; and

WHEREAS, an industrious student, Bernie Fagelson attended law school at George Washington University in the midst of the Great Depression, graduating in 1937; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Bernie Fagelson joined the other young men of his generation in the war effort, serving as a lieutenant in the United States Navy onboard the USS Quincy; and

WHEREAS, after his honorable wartime service, Bernie Fagelson embarked on a distinguished legal career that would span more than half of a century; he made many notable contributions to his profession, including service as president of the Alexandria Bar Association; and

WHEREAS, Bernie Fagelson played a pivotal role in the development of Alexandria as it transitioned from a primarily rural area to a city with a wide array of services for residents; he worked to balance growth with preservation efforts to protect the city’s many historic buildings; and

WHEREAS, in the 1950s, Bernie Fagelson worked with other community leaders to champion justice, fairness, and respect as he sought to help integrate Alexandria’s public facilities, eventually seeing the results of his labor years later; and

WHEREAS, Bernie Fagelson took an active role in community and civic affairs over the years, serving as the chair of the Alexandria Democratic Committee and in many other capacities; and

WHEREAS, throughout his long and remarkably well-lived life, Bernie Fagelson witnessed many changes in Alexandria, the Commonwealth, and the country and can look back at his many achievements with pride; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Bernard M. Fagelson hereby be commended on the occasion of his 100th birthday; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Bernard M. Fagelson as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and appreciation for his long and full life.
