Celebrating the life of Ruth Jerauld Hill Goodpasture.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 11, 2013

 

WHEREAS, Ruth Jerauld Hill Goodpasture, an inspirational leader and accomplished volunteer in the Bristol community, died on July 3, 2012; and

WHEREAS, born in Houston, Ruth Jerauld “Jerry” Goodpasture earned a bachelor’s degree from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton and a master’s degree from Middlebury College in Vermont; she later moved to Bristol in 1978; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Goodpasture was a familiar sight in many aspects of Bristol life, constantly working to ensure the best for her neighbors and the city; and

WHEREAS, as a member of the Bristol Virginia Board of Zoning Appeals, Jerry Goodpasture was crucial in efforts to boost property sales and growth in downtown Bristol; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Goodpasture founded or encouraged several major events in the city and served as the treasurer of Believe in Bristol, an organization promoting the revitalization of downtown Bristol; and

WHEREAS, fostering growth in the arts and culture sectors of Bristol, Jerry Goodpasture worked with the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance capital campaign committee and chaired the Bristol Ballet Board and the Arts and Entertainment District Steering Committee; and

WHEREAS, a supporter of education, Jerry Goodpasture served on various committees at local schools, also working with the Virginia Middle School community water safety and introductory Spanish programs; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Goodpasture also served on committees at Virginia High School and helped to raise thousands of dollars for the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams; she coached the girls’ soccer team to the quarterfinals of the Virginia High School League Group A state tournament in 2008; and

WHEREAS, deeply respectful of country and heritage, Jerry Goodpasture was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, Daughters of the Cincinnati, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Daughters of the Republic of Texas; and

WHEREAS, a devout member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Jerry Goodpasture taught Sunday school, worked with the Vacation Bible School, served on the vestry and on the stewardship committee, and founded the church’s Rally Day and Alternative Giving Market; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Goodpasture even touched lives outside of the region, helping a Ukrainian woman, whom she had met years ago, and her family to relocate to Bristol; and

WHEREAS, entering hospice care in May 2012, Jerry Goodpasture allowed a local newspaper to report her experiences, raising awareness of the selfless grace shown by hospice personnel in improving quality of life for patients and their families; and

WHEREAS, through her kindness, generosity, and leadership, Jerry Goodpasture left behind a legacy that will be felt in Bristol for years to come; and

WHEREAS, a woman who placed family above all else, Jerry Goodpasture is survived and dearly missed by her husband, Frank III; her children, Frank IV, Benjamin, John, Ruth, and Mary, and their families; her parents, Raymond and Jerauld; and many other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of a visionary community leader and tireless volunteer in Bristol, Ruth Jerauld Hill Goodpasture; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ruth Jerauld Hill Goodpasture as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
