Commending the Lynch family.

WHEREAS, the Lynch family’s thoughtful support of the George Mason University School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution has led to the establishment of a world-class retreat center and other initiatives designed to bring individuals and organizations together to resolve conflict peaceably; and

WHEREAS, the now-deceased Edwin M. Lynch, a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates, began the Lynch family’s involvement with George Mason University when he served as a Foundation trustee and as an advisory board member and chair of the then Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution; and

WHEREAS, in 1987 Edwin Lynch endowed the first chair and established an annual lecture series in memory of his parents, Vernon and Minnie Lynch, to bring noted speakers to George Mason University to broaden the understanding and knowledge of conflict and conflict resolution; and

WHEREAS, the following year, Edwin Lynch helped establish the world’s first doctoral program in conflict resolution at George Mason University; and

WHEREAS, in 1999 Edwin Lynch and his wife, Helen, graciously donated their home and its surrounding acreage to the George Mason University School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution to establish “Point of View”; and

WHEREAS, Point of View, today, a 120-acre international research and retreat center located 30 miles south of Washington, D.C., serves as the tranquil setting for conflict resolution teaching, research, and practice; and

WHEREAS, Point of View welcomes diverse representatives of conflict resolution practice, teaching, and research from local and global communities of conflict and conflict resolution to its harmonious environment; and

WHEREAS, the Lynch family has continued to generously support the George Mason University School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution with gifts from Edwin and Helen’s children, Helen Marie Soussou, Sandra Shopes, Martha Walther, and Edwin Lynch, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, the Lynch family’s ongoing support of the George Mason University School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution has enabled the institution to expand the body of knowledge about conflict resolution; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Lynch family for their visionary generosity and dedication to advancing the study of conflict resolution; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Lynch family as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the family’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflict.
