2013 SESSION
13105144DWHEREAS, the Atlantic Coast Conference, one of the nation’s largest intercollegiate athletic conferences, proudly celebrates 60 years of excellence in 2013; and
WHEREAS, in 1953 seven schools—Clemson University, Duke University, University of Maryland, University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, University of South Carolina, and Wake Forest University—came together to form the Atlantic Coast Conference; and
WHEREAS, the Atlantic Coast Conference welcomed the University of Virginia later that same year and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2004; and
WHEREAS, today, the Atlantic Coast Conference has 12 members—Boston College, Clemson University, Duke University, Florida State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Maryland, University of Miami, University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and Wake Forest University; and
WHEREAS, in 2012 the University of Louisville was accepted as an Atlantic Coast Conference member and the University of Notre Dame was accepted in all sports but football and hockey; Syracuse University and University of Pittsburgh will join beginning in the 2013 academic year; and
WHEREAS, the Atlantic Coast Conference sanctions competition in 25 sports in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA); and
WHEREAS, since its inception, the Atlantic Coast Conference has enjoyed great success, with member schools capturing 127 NCAA championships and 145 men’s individual titles and 104 women’s individual titles; and
WHEREAS, the Atlantic Coast Conference places a strong focus on academic excellence and personal integrity and encourages community service efforts among its member schools; and
WHEREAS, in 2011 the Atlantic Coast Conference opened its Hall of Champions, located in Greensboro, North Carolina, to honor the accomplishments of its student-athletes; and
WHEREAS, under the visionary leadership of Commissioner John Swofford, the Atlantic Coast Conference has continued to play an influential role in intercollegiate athletics; and
WHEREAS, on the occasion of its 60th anniversary, the Atlantic Coast Conference looks back with pride at its accomplishments as it continues its proud tradition of excellence; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Atlantic Coast Conference on the occasion of its 60th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Swofford, Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes for the conference’s future endeavors.
