HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 962
Commending the Virginia Housing Development Authority.

WHEREAS, the Virginia Housing Development Authority proudly celebrated 40 years of helping Virginians attain quality affordable  housing in 2012; and

WHEREAS, in 1972 the Virginia General Assembly passed the Virginia Housing Development Authority Act, which created the Virginia Housing Development Authority; and

WHEREAS, since its creation, the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) has financed more than 177,000 single family homes and 139,000 rental units to help Virginians attain safe, quality, affordable housing; and

WHEREAS, VHDA administers a number of federal housing programs, including the Housing Choice Voucher Program and the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program, which have provided housing assistance to those Virginians most in need; and

WHEREAS, VHDA has allocated its own resources through its Virginia Housing Fund and REACH program, which have supported more than $1.9 billion in housing programs; and

WHEREAS, VHDA has helped more than 132,000 Virginians prepare for homeownership by offering free homebuyer classes, both online and in classrooms around the state; and

WHEREAS, through the efforts of VHDA’s loyal and dedicated employees, VHDA’s various programs have supported the creation of jobs and enhanced local wages and taxes; and

WHEREAS, VHDA is rated one of the top three state housing finance authorities in the United States, and its employees who help maintain this reputation merit strong respect and appreciation; and

WHEREAS, VHDA works with lenders, developers, local governments, community service organizations, and others to help Virginians have quality housing; and

WHEREAS, for 40 years, VHDA has been helping to turn the American Dream into a reality for Virginians who might not otherwise be able to own a home of their own; and

WHEREAS, VHDA celebrated its anniversary at a number of events and looks forward to continuing to fulfill its mission in the future; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Virginia Housing Development Authority on the occasion of its 40th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Housing Development Authority as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the authority’s dedication to serving the residents of the Commonwealth.
