2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Hunter Smith Family Foundation, located in Charlottesville, has thoughtfully established the Hunter J. Smith Endowment for Freshman Seminars at The College of William and Mary; and
WHEREAS, a member of the Class of 1951, Hunter Smith majored in philosophy and was a member of Pi Beta Phi while an undergraduate at The College of William and Mary; and
WHEREAS, Hunter Smith’s visionary gift through the Hunter Smith Family Foundation will help ensure that current and future first-year students at The College of William and Mary have the opportunity to begin their undergraduate careers with a Freshman Seminar; and
WHEREAS, established in 1993, Freshman Seminars at The College of William and Mary provide students with the opportunity to complete in-depth study, learn research methods, engage in rigorous analytical thinking and writing, and work closely with faculty; and
WHEREAS, more than 100 Freshman Seminars are offered every year at The College of William and Mary on a range of topics and with class size limited to 15 students, allowing students to gain invaluable skills that will help them in their undergraduate experience and future careers; and
WHEREAS, the Hunter Smith Family Foundation’s establishment of the Hunter J. Smith Endowment for Freshman Seminars at The College of William and Mary, with an extraordinarily generous gift of $10 million, provides invaluable support to the college in its mission of educating the leaders of tomorrow; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Hunter Smith Family Foundation for its commitment to higher education on the occasion of the foundation’s establishment of the Hunter J. Smith Endowment for Freshman Seminars at The College of William and Mary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Hunter Smith Family Foundation as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the foundation’s foresight and dedication to enhancing the higher education experience of students at The College of William and Mary.
