2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Bath County High School softball team capped a winning 2012 season by capturing its second straight Virginia High School League Group A, Division 1 state championship; and
WHEREAS, the Bath County Chargers, who also won the Pioneer District and Region C Division 1 titles, faced familiar rival Holston High School in the state championship final held at Radford University; and
WHEREAS, the Cavaliers came out strong, scoring two runs in the first inning, but Bath County senior Jailyn Ford answered with a home run in the bottom of the first and drove in Amanda Shifflett in the bottom of the third to tie the game; and
WHEREAS, in the top of the sixth, the Cavaliers sent one over the fence to take a 3 - 2 lead, but Bath County came from behind again, with Rebekkah Pauley and Jordan Fry hitting singles to get on base; and
WHEREAS, as the tension mounted, Bath County’s Allyson Cutlip then drove the ball into right field and Rebekkah Pauley and Jordan Fry advanced to home plate to give the Cavaliers a 4 - 3 advantage; and
WHEREAS, Myranda Matheny then batted in Allyson Cutlip to give Bath County High School its fifth and final run, while the Chargers’ strong defense kept the Holston Cavaliers at bay for the rest of the game; and
WHEREAS, the entire team, led by pitcher Jailyn Ford who struck out 13 in the state final game to end her high school career with 1,065 strikeouts, worked hard throughout the season and contributed to the team’s second straight state title; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant season and state championship win is a tribute to the talent and hard work of the players, leadership of head coach Lisa Baugh and her staff, and the support of the Bath County High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Bath County High School softball team on winning the 2012 Virginia High School League Group A, Division 1 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lisa Baugh, head coach of the Bath County High School softball team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s outstanding season and championship performance.
