WHEREAS, Sherman Saunders, the mayor of the City of Danville and a hardworking community advocate, retired as the executive director of Pittsylvania County Community Action, Inc., in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Sherman Saunders dedicated 42 years of invaluable service to Pittsylvania County Community Action (PCCA), one of over 1,000 community action agencies in the country; for nearly five decades, PCCA has worked to raise awareness of and eliminate poverty in the area; and

WHEREAS, with Sherman Saunders as its executive director for 33 years, the PCCA successfully carried out programs to provide preschool-aged child development, meals for the elderly, job placement assistance, and housing improvements; and

WHEREAS, having already touched countless lives with his benevolent efforts at the PCCA, Sherman Saunders will continue to serve the public as a member of the Danville City Council and as the mayor of the city; and

WHEREAS, as a member or former member of numerous boards, commissions, and civic organizations, Sherman Saunders is a staunch advocate for the growth and betterment of Pittsylvania County; and

WHEREAS, a pillar of the Pittsylvania County community, Sherman Saunders is a role model to other local leaders in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Sherman Saunders on the occasion of his retirement as the executive director of Pittsylvania County Community Action, Inc.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sherman Saunders as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his ongoing commitment to serving the residents of Pittsylvania County and the Commonwealth.
