13104987DWHEREAS, the Augusta Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, the oldest chartered squadron in the Commonwealth, celebrated its 56th anniversary in 2012; and
WHEREAS, the Civil Air Patrol, founded in 1941 by citizens concerned about the defense of America’s coastline, has a long and proud tradition of service to the country; and
WHEREAS, during World War II, Civil Air Patrol pilots flew more than 500,000 hours, sank two enemy submarines, and rescued hundreds of crash survivors; and
WHEREAS, President Harry S. Truman formally established the Civil Air Patrol in 1946, and with the passage of Public Law 80-557 by Congress in 1948, the Civil Air Patrol was charged with three primary missions—aerospace education, cadet programs, and emergency services; and
WHEREAS, on December 12, 1956, local residents formed the Augusta Composite Squadron, which today primarily serves Augusta, Rockbridge, and Rockingham Counties and supports Civil Air Patrol missions across the nation; and
WHEREAS, the Augusta Composite Squadron, located at the Eagles Nest Airport in Waynesboro, is composed of dedicated volunteers who generously give of their time and talents to advance the mission of the Civil Air Patrol; and
WHEREAS, Augusta Composite Squad members help educate youth, assist with emergency services, and provide information about aerospace education; and
WHEREAS, the Augusta Composite Squad provides its members the opportunity to use their skills to serve the community and nation; and
WHEREAS, for more than half of a century, the Augusta Composite Squad has been a vital part of the local community and provided invaluable service to the Commonwealth and the nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Augusta Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol on the occasion of its 56th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Captain William F. Green, Jr., the squadron commander of the Augusta Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the squadron’s dedication to serving the community.
