HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 903
Commending the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department.

WHEREAS, the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate its 75th anniversary in September of 2013; and

WHEREAS, incorporated in September 1938, the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department (OWL VFD) was the result of a two-year effort by a group of area residents who took the initiative to create a fire department in eastern Prince William County; and

WHEREAS, using their own money to pay bills and putting up their own property as collateral for loans, this dedicated group of residents funded the OWL VFD’s first building and the original apparatus; and

WHEREAS, with the original fire station located in Occoquan, the OWL VFD expanded to include a second station on Jefferson Davis Highway in 1958; both stations later moved to their current locations in Woodbridge, where a third station was also opened; and

WHEREAS, today, the three stations of the OWL VFD, Stations 2, 12, and 14, are extremely active, diligently serving 80,000 residents in a 27-square-mile area; and

WHEREAS, building a tradition of excellence since it was founded, the members of the OWL VFD are committed to protecting the community and use the highest quality equipment to provide fire suppression, emergency medical services, and rescue services; and

WHEREAS, planning for every eventuality, the highly trained members of the OWL VFD dedicate thousands of hours to continuing education and certification courses; and

WHEREAS, embodying the dedication to the community displayed by all firefighters throughout the Commonwealth, the members of the OWL VFD remain vigilant around the clock, working nights, weekends, and holidays; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the department’s tireless work in safeguarding the community.
