WHEREAS, Carolyn Bethel, a senior at Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke, was the girls’ individual champion of the 2012 Virginia High School League Group AA state cross country tournament; and

WHEREAS, Carolyn Bethel competed against runners from 15 other high schools in the tournament, held at the Great Meadows course in The Plains, to secure her second consecutive state individual title; and

WHEREAS, much like the district and regional tournaments, the state championship race began with the exceptionally talented Carolyn Bethel as one of the leaders; and

WHEREAS, when another runner pulled ahead at the halfway point of the race, Carolyn Bethel kept a wise pace and eventually took a decisive lead; and

WHEREAS, Carolyn Bethel expanded her lead to finish with a time of 18:11, beating her closest opponents by 20 seconds; and

WHEREAS, Carolyn Bethel’s exceptional performance propelled the Hidden Valley High School girls’ cross country team to a fourth-place finish in the tournament; and

WHEREAS, an exemplary athlete, Carolyn Bethel displayed dedication, perseverance, and skill in achieving victory; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Carolyn Bethel on becoming the girls’ individual champion of the 2012 Virginia High School League Group AA state cross country tournament; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Carolyn Bethel as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her success and best wishes on her future endeavors.
