HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 897
Commending the Blacksburg High School boys' cross country team.

WHEREAS, the Blacksburg High School boys’ cross country team won the 2012 Virginia High School League Group AA state cross country tournament for the fourth year in a row; and

WHEREAS, the Blacksburg High School Bruins, who fielded six of seven runners from the 2011 championship team, were favored to win in the 16-team race at the Great Meadows course in The Plains; and

WHEREAS, with four runners finishing in the top six, the Blacksburg Bruins lived up to the high expectations and posted an amazing score of 19, outscoring their closest opponent by 60 points; and

WHEREAS, senior Nick Link finished first to claim the individual title, followed by senior Matthew Pasier, sophomore Noah Combs, senior Matthew Borny, senior Luke Phillips, junior Kenneth Hagen, and senior Nick Wilson; and

WHEREAS, with the girls’ cross country team also recording a win, the Blacksburg High School teams swept the state cross country tournament for the second year in a row; and

WHEREAS, the team’s tremendous success is due to the hard work of the runners, the devoted leadership of the coaching staff, and the support of the students, administration, and fans of Blacksburg High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Blacksburg High School boys’ cross country team on winning the Virginia High School League Group AA state cross country tournament for the fourth year in a row; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to James DeMarco, head coach of the Blacksburg High School boys’ cross country team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the team’s focus, determination, and skill.
