2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, Ramez Said Azoury, M.D., a distinguished physician and a respected educator from Norfolk, died on January 12, 2013; and
WHEREAS, a native of Beirut, Lebanon, Ramez Azoury, the son of Bahía and Said Azoury, was educated in Lebanon in the French school systems and became the nation’s top Scout while a member of the Lebanese Scouting Federation; and
WHEREAS, Ramez Azoury earned a bachelor’s degree and a medical degree from the American University of Beirut and completed a residency there before completing a residency and fellowship in the United States at Johns Hopkins University; and
WHEREAS, a highly skilled gynecologic pathologist, Dr. Azoury then returned to the American University of Beirut and served as an associate professor before becoming acting chair of its obstetrics-gynecology department; and
WHEREAS, as Lebanon became engulfed in a civil war, Dr. Azoury relocated to the United States and worked briefly at the University of Cincinnati before returning to the American University of Beirut as chair of the obstetrics-gynecology department; and
WHEREAS, an outstanding physician, Dr. Azoury decided in 1986 to relocate permanently to the United States to protect his wife and four children from the effects of the Lebanese Civil War and made Norfolk his new home; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Azoury brought a wealth of experience and expertise to Eastern Virginia Medical School and later became a professor and the director of the obstetrics-gynecology department at DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Azoury not only provided outstanding care to his patients, but served as a mentor and leader to many aspiring physicians, which led to his selection as the recipient of the DePaul Medical Center’s Award for Excellence in Teaching; and
WHEREAS, after touching countless lives during a storied medical career in Lebanon and the United States, Dr. Azoury retired in May 2012; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Azoury cared deeply for his patients and his legacy lives on through the knowledge and sense of compassion he passed down to many young doctors in the Commonwealth and around the world; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Azoury will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his devoted wife, Jacqueline; children, Candice, Sharon, Krystle, and Said, and their families; and many other family members, friends, and former colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a distinguished physician and respected educator, Ramez Said Azoury, M.D.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ramez Said Azoury, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
