HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 884 Commending Bessie Ann Morefield.

WHEREAS, Bessie Ann Morefield, a tireless public servant and lifelong resident of Spotsylvania County, retired in 2013, after more than four decades of service to the county, the Commonwealth, and the country as a voting registrar; and

WHEREAS, Bessie Morefield served in the Spotsylvania County voter registration office for 29 years in a full-time capacity; she then served an additional 15 years as a part-time assistant registrar and finally retired after almost 45 years of outstanding service; and

WHEREAS, working through 12 presidential elections, Bessie Morefield watched voter registration in Spotsylvania County increase dramatically from 5,600 in 1968 to 84,000 in 2013; and

WHEREAS, Bessie Morefield helped the county transition through changes in technology, overseeing the replacement of paper ballots with touchscreen voting machines; she also ensured that operations on election days went smoothly by finding staff to cover all 27 polling places; and

WHEREAS, amassing an incredible wealth of knowledge about the history of Spotsylvania County over the years, Bessie Morefield can answer almost any question about the area; and

WHEREAS, over the course of her exemplary career, Bessie Morefield met and befriended thousands of her fellow residents, both in her capacity as registrar and as an active member of Massaponax Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, during her well-earned retirement, Bessie Morefield plans to spend time with her husband of 62 years, Charles, and her four children and their families; she will continue to serve the community by doing volunteer work; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Bessie Ann Morefield, a dedicated public servant and lifelong resident of Spotsylvania County, on the occasion of her retirement as a voting registrar; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Bessie Ann Morefield as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her civic engagement and contributions to the community.
