WHEREAS, Dr. Emma Violand-Sanchez, an experienced, devoted educator, was elected as the chair of the School Board of Arlington Public Schools for the 2012 - 2013 term; and
WHEREAS, immigrating to the United States from Bolivia in 1961, Dr. Violand-Sanchez holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Radford University and a doctorate from George Washington University; and
WHEREAS, over the course of a decades-long career as a caring educator, Dr. Violand-Sanchez inspired and motivated countless students and made many lasting contributions to the academic field and the community; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Violand-Sanchez joined the School Board of Arlington Public Schools in 2009 and went on to serve as the vice chair; she is also currently serving as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Violand-Sanchez designed and implemented an extensive English language learning program that has been used as a model for similar programs around the country; she also helped establish the first bilingual general educational development degree program in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, as the founder of Arlington County’s Project Family and the Dream Project, Inc., Dr. Violand-Sanchez created many new educational opportunities for children and young adults; and
WHEREAS, deeply dedicated to the well-being of all of her fellow Arlington County residents, Dr. Violand-Sanchez works tirelessly as an advocate and an activist with many civic organizations; and
WHEREAS, over the course of her career, Dr. Violand-Sanchez has received many accolades; she earned the prestigious Fulbright Award for her work as a consultant on educational reform in Bolivia; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Violand-Sanchez and Walter Tejada hold the distinction of being the first two Latinos to concurrently hold chair positions on the School Board of Arlington Public Schools and on the Arlington County Board; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Violand-Sanchez brings a wealth of wisdom and experience to the School Board of Arlington Public Schools and strives to ensure that students in Arlington County continue to receive an exemplary education; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Dr. Emma Violand-Sanchez on being named the chair of the School Board of Arlington Public Schools for the 2012 - 2013 term; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Emma Violand-Sanchez as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her tireless efforts to enhance learning opportunities for students in Arlington County.
