Commending Wakefield High School.

WHEREAS, Wakefield High School, an outstanding public educational institution in Arlington County, celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2013; and

WHEREAS, Wakefield High School opened in 1953 with an original enrollment of over 1,500 students; the school has made myriad enhancements for its student body over the years, adding an auditorium and gym, a swimming pool, a courtyard, and an expansion to the library; and

WHEREAS, today, the students of Wakefield High School have access to an exemplary academic program; they are encouraged to take at least one of the over 30 advanced placement courses in seven areas of study available at the school; and

WHEREAS, with over 50 clubs, Wakefield High School offers extensive options for extracurricular activities, including academic honorary societies, service groups, and special interest organizations; and

WHEREAS, Wakefield High School has an accomplished athletic program, comprised of 19 different athletic teams, and a dedicated, enthusiastic fan base to cheer on the Wakefield Warriors; and

WHEREAS, Wakefield High School has demonstrated an unyielding commitment to providing an excellent education for the disadvantaged students among its extremely diverse student body; and

WHEREAS, Wakefield High School operates a nonprofit organization that has awarded over $1 million in grants and scholarships to hundreds of scholars and teachers, ensuring that students receive the best instruction and have the opportunity to continue on to higher education; and

WHEREAS, President Barack Obama has honored Wakefield High School with visits to the school, once in 2009 and again in 2011, to deliver messages about the importance of education and to congratulate the school on its many successes; and

WHEREAS, the students and teachers of Wakefield High School have received many accolades; in 2011 students earned over $6 million in combined college scholarships and social studies teacher Colette Fraley was named the Region IV Teacher of the Year; and

WHEREAS, since 2010, Wakefield High School has been proficiently led by its principal, Dr. Christian Willmore, a former assistant principal who brings a wealth of teaching experience and a genuine concern for the success and well-being of his students; and

WHEREAS, each member of the faculty, administration, and staff at Wakefield High School contributes to motivating, inspiring, and educating the future leaders of Arlington County and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Wakefield High School on the occasion of its 60th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Wakefield High School as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the school’s ongoing tradition of academic excellence.
