WHEREAS, the Honorable Leslie M. Alden, an admired jurist who served the Fairfax County Circuit Court with great distinction, retired in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Leslie Alden earned a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from George Mason University before embarking on a career in private practice that spanned a decade; and

WHEREAS, in 1995 Leslie Alden was elected to serve as a judge for the Fairfax County General District Court and was elected as a judge for the Fairfax County Circuit Court one year later; and

WHEREAS, throughout her tenure, Judge Alden presided with great fairness and integrity while also making many contributions to the judicial system in the Commonwealth, across the country, and around the world; and

WHEREAS, a member of the board, member and chair of the board of managerial trustees, and international director for the National Association of Women Judges, Judge Alden developed an award-winning judicial program entitled Beyond Borders: The Impact of International Law in U.S. Courts; and

WHEREAS, Judge Alden also served as president of the International Association of Women Judges, where she was named as a representative to the Economic and Social Council at the United Nations; and

WHEREAS, an active participant in international legal and judicial programs, Judge Alden has spoken at conferences around the world and published a host of articles related to international law and jurisprudence; and

WHEREAS, a member of numerous professional organizations, Judge Alden has earned the respect of her colleagues for her knowledge of the law and commitment to justice; and

WHEREAS, an inspirational role model, Judge Alden instructs and inspires rising leaders of the legal and judicial professions as a senior lecturer in law at George Mason University; and

WHEREAS, in her well-deserved retirement, Judge Alden looks forward to continuing to teach while also spending time with family and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Honorable Leslie M. Alden for her distinguished service to the Commonwealth on the occasion of her retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Leslie M. Alden as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for her commitment to justice and public service.
