2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Science Museum of Virginia has worked with a variety of individuals, institutions, and organizations to coordinate the first Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Day at the General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, Governor McDonnell has placed a high priority on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, on February 18, 2013, the Science Museum of Virginia will bring together several groups who have made significant impacts on STEM education in the Commonwealth to the General Assembly Building to showcase their efforts; and
WHEREAS, on that day, STEM Day participants will be brought together by the Science Museum of Virginia; Virginia’s 2013 Outstanding Scientists, Dr. Harold Burkhart and Dr. Patricia Dove from Virginia Tech and Virginia 2013 Science Innovation winner, Cupron, Inc., will all be recognized on the floor in the Chamber of the Virginia House of Delegates; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Harold Burkhart, the University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation, has made significant contributions in the creation of models to forecast forest stand development, growth, and yield; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Patricia Dove, the C.P. Miles Professor of Science in the Department of Geosciences and Director of the Biogeochemistry of Earth Processes research group at Virginia Tech, has become the world’s leading expert in the field of biomineralization; and
WHEREAS, Cupron, Inc., a firm based in Richmond and Israel, focuses on transforming ordinary products into extraordinary products through the introduction of the unique properties of copper; and
WHEREAS, a leader in science education in the Commonwealth, the Science Museum of Virginia has devoted considerable time and energy to successfully organize the first STEM Day at the General Assembly; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Science Museum of Virginia on its work to coordinate the first STEM Day at the General Assembly; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Science Museum of Virginia as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for the museum’s dedicated efforts to advance STEM education in the Commonwealth.
