2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, Joe L. Allbritton, the founder of Allbritton Communications, died on December 12, 2012; and
WHEREAS, a native of D’Lo, Mississippi, Joe Allbritton was the sixth of seven children and went to work at a young age; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from high school, Joe Allbritton went on to earn a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from Baylor University and served his country during World War II in the United States Navy; and
WHEREAS, Joe Allbritton built a business empire in Houston before purchasing The Washington Star and several television stations in the mid-1970s; and
WHEREAS, Joe Allbritton sold the paper a few years later, but retained ownership of the television stations, which laid the foundation for his media empire; he also spent several years in banking in the Washington, D.C., area; and
WHEREAS, Joe Allbritton supported hundreds of philanthropic, educational, and artistic institutions in the Washington Metropolitan Area and his home state of Texas; and
WHEREAS, Joe Allbritton leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 45 years, Barbara; his son, Robert; grandchildren, Alex and Katherine; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an influential businessman, Joe L. Allbritton; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joe L. Allbritton as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
