2013 SESSION
13104606DWHEREAS, Charles D. McGuire, a proud and loyal servant to the Reston community, died on January 19, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Charles “Dan” McGuire graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, where he played baseball; he remained an avid supporter of the University of Maryland Terrapins throughout his life, joining the M Club and serving as president of the Terrapin Club in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Dan McGuire proudly served in the United States Army before starting a long career as a community leader in Reston; and
WHEREAS, while serving as the president of the Reston Homeowner’s Coalition in 1988, Dan McGuire nominated Reston for the National Civic League’s All-America City Award; and
WHEREAS, in the application, Dan McGuire showed his love for Reston by describing its “diversity and dynamism” and noting its many accomplishments in service to the community; and
WHEREAS, Dan McGuire went on to serve as a board member, vice president, and second vice president of the Reston Citizens Association (RCA); and
WHEREAS, a man of strong convictions, Dan McGuire was also known for his good humor and easygoing nature; he provided invaluable experience, guidance, and friendship to the members of the RCA board; and
WHEREAS, Dan McGuire worked hard to make the Reston license plate a reality, gathering support from friends and colleagues throughout the community; and
WHEREAS, often advocating for self-governance in Reston, Dan McGuire supported the RCA’s attempts to incorporate Reston as an independent town or city; and
WHEREAS, as a local leader and volunteer, Dan McGuire earned a great deal of respect for his willingness to serve the community and the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, a descendant of Walter Chiles, a member of the House of Burgesses in early Virginia, Dan McGuire had a passion for the history of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Dan McGuire served as the governor of the Jamestowne Society from 2000 to 2002, the company governor of the Washington-Northern Virginia Company of the Jamestowne Society, and a member of the George Washington chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution; and
WHEREAS, a devout and loyal Catholic, Dan McGuire enjoyed faith and fellowship with the Reston community; and
WHEREAS, Dan McGuire was a true gentleman and left an indelible legacy of leadership, cooperation, and care for the community that will continue to inspire other Reston leaders for years to come; and
WHEREAS, Dan McGuire is survived by his loving wife, Edie; children, Shannon and Kirsty, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Charles D. McGuire, a proud Restonian and a pillar of the community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Charles D. McGuire as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
