HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 843
Celebrating the life of Sergeant David James Chambers.

WHEREAS, United States Army Sergeant David James Chambers of Hampton died in the line of duty on January 16, 2013, while on patrol in Panjwai District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Kecoughtan High School, David “D. C.” Chambers completed two years of college classes before joining the United States Army in 2009; and

WHEREAS, after completing basic training, D. C. Chambers was assigned to a squadron in Germany and first deployed to Afghanistan from June 2010 to May 2011, where he earned a Purple Heart; and

WHEREAS, D. C. Chambers was then assigned to the 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division under the control of the 7th Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to his men and serving his country, Sergeant Chambers completed the United States Army Warrior Leader Course and deployed again to Afghanistan in November 2012; and

WHEREAS, during his distinguished military service, D. C. Chambers earned a Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, Army Achievement Medal with 3rd oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Driver’s Badge; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Chambers’ death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of American men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces all over the world and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; and

WHEREAS, an intelligent and hard-working Soldier known for his love of country music, D. C. Chambers will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his parents, Michael and Julie; brother, Steven, and his wife, Kristina; and numerous other family members, friends, and fellow Soldiers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Sergeant David James Chambers; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sergeant David James Chambers as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
