Commending the Town of Crewe.

WHEREAS, the Town of Crewe, a dynamic town in Southside Virginia, celebrates the 125th anniversary of its founding on April 19, 2013; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Crewe traces its roots to when the Norfolk and Western Railroad purchased land from Jane Robertson to establish a new railroad terminal between Roanoke and Norfolk; and

WHEREAS, in 1888, the year following the land purchase, a community formed around the completed railway terminal, originally known as Robertson’s Switch or Robertson’s Siding; and

WHEREAS, that same year, the name of the community was changed to Crewe, in honor of a thriving railway town in Cheshire, England; and

WHEREAS, in 1893 the community was officially incorporated as the Town of Crewe by the General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Crewe has always been a vibrant, progressive community, looking forward to future growth while maintaining its small town charm; and

WHEREAS, today, the Town of Crewe attracts visitors from all over the Commonwealth with its many historical sites and community events like the Virginia Chicken Festival, one of the oldest and largest food festivals in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Town of Crewe on the occasion of its 125th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lee Simmons, the mayor of the Town of Crewe, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the town’s prosperity and best wishes for the future.
