WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, United States Army Reserve Captain Michael Dermott Mullan, a nurse with the 344th Combat Support Hospital and at Mercy Medical Center in New York and a member of the New York City Fire Department 7th Battalion Ladder Company 12, responded to the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center site while on duty as a firefighter; and

WHEREAS, Captain Mullan, a New York City firefighter for seven years and a 15-year veteran of the United States Army Reserve who had served as a combat medic, reported to the Marriott World Trade Center Hotel, located at the base of the Twin Towers, to rescue civilians and other emergency workers trapped in the hotel; and

WHEREAS, Captain Mullan reached the 19th floor of the Marriott World Trade Center Hotel and was assisting individuals to lower levels when the South Tower (2 World Trade Center) collapsed, blowing out windows and doors and knocking individuals down the stairwells in the hotel; and

WHEREAS, the order was given to evacuate the seriously damaged building, which had now been cut in half by falling debris; however, two firefighters several floors above Captain Mullan sent out distress calls; and

WHEREAS, Captain Mullan courageously volunteered to rescue his fellow firefighters; a few moments later, the North Tower (1 World Trade Center) collapsed, virtually destroying the rest of the hotel; and

WHEREAS, Captain Mullan was remembered for his heroic acts when the Joint Task Force-Civil Support at Joint Base Langley Eustis, the only standing chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear response joint task force in the United States, dedicated Mullan Hall in his honor; and

WHEREAS, Captain Mullan, a highly skilled professional who dedicated his career to helping others and rose to answer the call to duty in the nation’s hour of need, exemplified the ideals and commitment to service of his fellow nurses, soldiers, and firefighters; and

WHEREAS, a son, a brother, and a friend who died as he lived, helping others, Michael Mullan left behind to cherish many fond memories, his parents, Theresa and the late Patrick; siblings, Kelly Ann and Patrick, and their families; and many friends and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commemorate the life and legacy of a dedicated soldier, skilled nurse, brave fireman, and courageous American, Captain Michael Dermott Mullan; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Captain Michael Dermott Mullan, Joint Task Force-Civil Support at Joint Base Langley Eustis, and Ladder 12 and Battalion 7 of the New York City Fire Department, as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for Captain Mullan’s dedicated service to his country and for his supreme sacrifice.
