HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 818
Commending Warwick River Christian School.

WHEREAS, Warwick River Christian School, which serves families and Mennonite congregations on the Virginia Peninsula, proudly celebrated its 70th anniversary of educating and nurturing students in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Warwick River Christian School, formed in 1942 with strong ties to the local Mennonite community, first opened its doors with one class composed of 22 first through third grade students; and

WHEREAS, Eva Carper, known simply as “The Teacher,” presided over the school in its early years, providing sound instruction and guidance to students; and

WHEREAS, Warwick River Christian School has grown over the years while maintaining its focus on offering students an open and inviting learning environment in which to thrive personally and academically; and

WHEREAS, Warwick River Christian School students have helped build the school’s reputation as a force with which to be reckoned on the playing field, particularly in soccer; and

WHEREAS, Warwick River Christian School students also have numerous opportunities to develop their musical talents through the children’s and middle school choirs and various ensembles; and

WHEREAS, today Warwick River Christian School, under the outstanding direction of principal Mabel Nelson, has 180 students in pre-K through eighth grade on a multi-building campus; and

WHEREAS, known for the welcoming environment that leads students to later enroll their own children, Warwick River Christian School celebrated its proud heritage of educating students with a weekend of meals, singing, and fellowship; and

WHEREAS, Warwick River Christian School looks forward to continuing to serve its students with plans to add a gymnasium and high school in the future and to build upon its proud tradition of excellence; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Warwick River Christian School on the occasion of its 70th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Warwick River Christian School as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations, admiration for its commitment to quality education, and best wishes for the future.
