HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 816
Commending Christian Leonard.

WHEREAS, Christian Leonard, a fourth grader at General Stanford Elementary School in Newport News, is commended for his efforts to help those affected by Superstorm Sandy; and

WHEREAS, in late October, Superstorm Sandy, a mammoth storm, wreaked havoc along the East Coast of the United States, damaging homes and property with wind, snow, and rain; and

WHEREAS, Christian Leonard, after seeing coverage of the storm and its impact, brainstormed with his sister on how to best assist those in need and came up with the idea of sending blankets to help people who had lost their power stay warm; and

WHEREAS, Christian Leonard approached his parents and partnered with Chaplain Deborah Freeman, the coach of the Peninsula Youth Football and Cheerleading Organization; his school; and a nonprofit organization, Do Your Part, to collect and deliver the blankets; and

WHEREAS, the initiative, which came to be known as “Cover the East Coast with Blankets of Warm Love,” drew support from a wide range of individuals and organizations and resulted in blankets being delivered to New Jersey and New York; and

WHEREAS, an outstanding young man, Christian Leonard demonstrated great compassion, thoughtfulness, and ingenuity to help those in need; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Christian Leonard for his efforts to help those affected by Superstorm Sandy; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Christian Leonard as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his commitment to helping others in need.
