Celebrating the life of Robert Hobson Patterson, Jr.

WHEREAS, Robert Hobson Patterson, Jr., a brilliant attorney and admired figure in the Richmond and Virginia legal community, died on July 12, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a native of the City of Richmond, Robert “Bob” Patterson grew up in the Church Hill neighborhood of Richmond and attended John Marshall High School, where he was First Captain of the Corps of Cadets, before enrolling at Virginia Military Institute; and

WHEREAS, as the United States entered World War II, Bob Patterson joined countless other young men of his generation, interrupting his studies to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Bob Patterson returned to his beloved Virginia Military Institute to complete his undergraduate degree and went on to earn a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law; and

WHEREAS, a promising young attorney, Bob Patterson then joined the law firm of McGuire, Eggleston, Bocock & Woods, a predecessor of McGuireWoods, as its ninth attorney, and spent his entire legal career with the firm; and

WHEREAS, Bob Patterson served as chair of the firm from 1979 until 1989 and oversaw its growth and development from a regional law firm to a global one that today employs more than 900 attorneys that handle an array of legal matters; and

WHEREAS, an experienced litigator with a formidable knowledge of the law, Bob Patterson skillfully handled large and complex cases and dominated the courtroom as he represented his clients over the years; and

WHEREAS, president of the Richmond Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar, Bob Patterson made many contributions to his profession over the years; and

WHEREAS, a faithful alumnus of Virginia Military Institute, Bob Patterson served as president of the Alumni Association and board of visitors and earned its Distinguished Service Award and the New Market Medal; and

WHEREAS, committed to the well-being and education of young people, Bob Patterson generously gave of his time and talents as president of the Virginia Home for Boys and as a member of the State Board of Education; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity and character, Bob Patterson was a remarkable leader, respected attorney, and dedicated community servant; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife of nearly 50 years, Luise, Bob Patterson will be greatly missed by his wife, Anne Marie Whittemore; children, India, Robert III, and Margaret, and their families; stepson, Robert, and his family; former colleagues; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a distinguished attorney, Robert Hobson Patterson, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert Hobson Patterson, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
