Commending Lee Sherbeyn.

WHEREAS, Fauquier County Supervisor Lee Sherbeyn has been instrumental in helping Operation First Response raise money and awareness for veterans in need; and

WHEREAS, touched by the plight of many veterans and their families, Lee Sherbeyn sought a program that supplemented the work of groups like the Wounded Warrior Project by addressing individuals’ daily needs; and

WHEREAS, founded in 2004, Operation First Response, a Culpeper-based nonprofit group, has assisted over 8,000 veterans by buying them food, paying rent, or making vehicle payments; and

WHEREAS, Lee Sherbeyn partnered with Operation First Response in 2012, hosting a barbecue at his farm and raising $20,000 for the organization; and

WHEREAS, envisioning another initiative that would provide a steady stream of donations, Lee Sherbeyn realized that many small donations from the community would add up to a large contribution; and

WHEREAS, Lee Sherbeyn created the “Dollar Campaign,” a program designed to raise one dollar from each resident of Fauquier County; and

WHEREAS, hoping to expand the program to a national level, Lee Sherbeyn started by seeking friendly competition with other counties, challenging them to begin their own campaigns; and

WHEREAS, with Lee Sherbeyn’s enthusiastic support, the campaign has raised nearly $3,000 and has spread to Culpeper County; and

WHEREAS, Lee Sherbeyn has been very effective in his mission to help the men and women who have served the Commonwealth and the United States; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Lee Sherbeyn on his innovative work to raise money for veterans in need; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lee Sherbeyn as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his ongoing efforts to help support veterans and their families.
