2013 SESSION
13104515DWHEREAS, Jessie Thackrey, a longtime member of the City of Falls Church community who has made many lasting contributions to education in the City of Falls Church and Northern Virginia, will celebrate her 100th birthday on June 14, 2013; and
WHEREAS, in 1941 Jessie Thackrey settled in the City of Falls Church with her family, raising five children and taking part in community affairs; and
WHEREAS, Jessie Thackrey led efforts to create an independent school system for the City of Falls Church and served as a member of the school board and parent-teacher association; and
WHEREAS, Jessie Thackrey also worked with other community leaders to expand educational opportunities for Northern Virginia residents through the creation of Northern Virginia Community College; and
WHEREAS, Jessie Thackrey volunteered her time and talents as a Cub Scout leader, 4-H leader, member of the League of Women Voters, and warden at The Falls Church Episcopal; and
WHEREAS, Jessie Thackrey earned numerous awards and accolades throughout her life, including the Mattie Gundry Award from the Falls Church Commission on Women and the Friend of Education Award from George Mason High School; and
WHEREAS, the Falls Church Education Foundation honored Jessie Thackrey with the creation of the Jessie Thackrey Early Childhood Classroom Fund; and
WHEREAS, the matriarch of a large family, including five children, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and seven foreign exchange students, Jessie Thackrey has lived a long and meaningful life marked by service to others and the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Jessie Thackrey on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jessie Thackrey as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for her decades of civic involvement and contributions to the City of Falls Church.
