Commending the voters of Goochland County.

WHEREAS, the Constitution of Virginia declares “That all elections ought to be free; and that all men, having sufficient evidence of permanent common interest with, and attachment to, the community, have the right of suffrage”; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Jefferson, a native of Goochland County, declared that “The elective franchise, if guarded as the ark of our safety, will peaceably dissipate all combinations to subvert a Constitution, dictated by the wisdom, and resting on the will of the people”; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Goochland County have demonstrably taken to heart that declaration of their native son in their fidelity to exercising that elective franchise in expressing the will of the people; and

WHEREAS, in the General Election of 2008, the citizens of Goochland County cast 12,721 ballots, being 85.1 percent of their active voters, the highest turnout of any jurisdiction in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, in the General Election of 2012, the citizens of Goochland County cast 13,441 ballots, being 87.44 percent of their active voters, again the highest turnout of any jurisdiction in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the voters of Goochland County are to their fellow citizens in the Commonwealth a model most worthy of emulation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the voters of Goochland County for their zeal in discharging their civic duty; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Goochland County Board of Supervisors as a token of the esteem in which the members of the General Assembly hold the voters of Goochland County.
