2013 SESSION
13104077DWHEREAS, the Auburn High School girls’ volleyball team won the 2012 Virginia High School League Group A, Division I state volleyball championship; and
WHEREAS, the Auburn High School Eagles defeated Luray High School in the state final, claiming the team’s first state championship and the school’s first title in any sport since 1974; and
WHEREAS, finishing with a 12 - 0 district record and a 27 - 3 overall record, the Auburn Eagles were dominant in the regular season; and
WHEREAS, while holding most of their postseason opponents to less than 20 points per set, the Auburn Eagles faced a challenge in the semifinal against Altavista Combined School; and
WHEREAS, despite being tested, the Auburn Eagles frustrated the Altavista Colonels and rallied to win the match in three sets with scores of 25 - 18, 25 - 14, and 25 - 23; and
WHEREAS, advancing to the finals for the first time, the Auburn Eagles found themselves within reach of their season-long goal to win a championship title; and
WHEREAS, gaining unstoppable momentum as the match went on, the Auburn Eagles were brilliant in the final, defeating the Luray Bulldogs in three sets with scores of 25 - 18, 25 - 11, and 25 - 9; and
WHEREAS, senior Jordan Watson, the all-time kills leader in the Commonwealth, led the Auburn Eagles with a match-high 18 kills in the final; she was named Player of the Year by the Three Rivers District, Region C, and The Roanoke Times; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Sherry Millirons, head coach of the Auburn Eagles, the team has made five appearances in the final four of the state tournament since the 1995 - 1996 season; and
WHEREAS, each player on the team—Laren Altizer, Taylor Helms, Kayla Oliver, Breanna Nichols, Laura Vaughn, Marisa Perry, Madison Shumaker, Paige Altizer, Keri Musick, Jordan Watson, Brooke Bostwick, and Hannah Paredes—trained tirelessly in the offseason and contributed to the championship run; and
WHEREAS, along with the assistant coaches, Jill Gergen and Ben Kratz, Sherry Millirons encouraged the team to work hard, remain confident, and stay focused on earning a championship win; and
WHEREAS, the successful season is a tribute to the enthusiastic support shown by the students, fans, and administration of Auburn High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Auburn High School girls’ volleyball team on winning the 2012 Virginia High School League Group A, Division I state volleyball championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sherry Millirons, head coach of the Auburn High School girls’ volleyball team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the team’s hard work and unyielding determination.
