Commending John Horejsi.

WHEREAS, John Horejsi, a Vienna resident and the founder of Social Action Linking Together, was honored by the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy as one of its top 30 Social Justice Makers in 2012; and

WHEREAS, with honorees nominated by friends and colleagues, the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy’s (VICPP) awards for the top 30 Social Justice Makers are given to individuals who have demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of others through service and advocacy; and

WHEREAS, in 1983 John Horejsi founded Social Action Linking Together (SALT) to advocate for the Commonwealth’s welfare-dependent families, elderly poor, working poor, incarcerated, and homeless; and

WHEREAS, under John Horejsi’s exceptional leadership, the organization has grown from a small group of volunteers to a network of over 1,200 individuals, working diligently to enhance the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, SALT has achieved many successes over the years, increasing available food aid in the Commonwealth, boosting the income of 190,000 low-income workers, and supporting the passage of the Earned Income Tax Credit; and

WHEREAS, establishing and funding the Homeless Intervention Program, SALT has helped provide emergency assistance and keep over 7,000 distressed families in their homes; and

WHEREAS, John Horejsi supports the community by volunteering with the Fairfax County Advisory Social Services Board, the Fairfax County Alliance for Human Services, and with various Catholic charities; and

WHEREAS, receiving a great deal of recognition for his work, John Horejsi was also named the 2007 Fairfax County Citizen of the Year by the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations and honored in the Catholic Digest as one of the 12 Catholic Heroes in 2010; and

WHEREAS, John Horejsi received the VICPP award for the top 30 Social Justice Makers in a ceremony at the organization’s annual meeting on December 3, 2012; and

WHEREAS, with his tireless efforts, John Horejsi has given a voice to countless individuals facing poverty and helped to build a better future for many of those individuals; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend John Horejsi on being named one of the top 30 Social Justice Makers by the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Horejsi as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his dedication to the well-being of others.
